Developed by yogis for yogis (and their students), Manduka yoga accessories are for serious students – you won’t find this stuff in your local Target. Granted, it is a little pricier than your standard mats and towels, but the products are designed to last a lifetime, and with the sustainable practices the company practices, your lifetime may just be extended.

We checked out the eQua Plus towel, which is designed to be used on top of your yoga mat to provide a slip-resistant surface (and a handy way to dab the sweat from your brow). Interestingly, the material was more slip-resistant when damp – perfect for sweaty palms, but a little slick at the start of a workout. But the major selling point of the eQua Plus towel is in its sanitary properties. It is a poly/nylon blend with more than 25% of the fabric made from recycled coconut shells. These coconut fibers, mixed with active carbon, helps absorb and evaporate moisture (aka – sweat) quickly. The result? A towel that is not soaked or smelly by the time you are done with your workout. Plus, it is really soft (which may not be the best thing for me, who is easily distracted by soft things).

Manduka uses natural, recycled, biodegradable, and/or sustainable materials in all products, and support toxic-free facilities and fair labor practices. They offer a wide range of mats, towels, bags, and props to suit your every need.

These weights are designed to be worn every day, increasing calorie-burn with even the most mundane activities. Every little bit helps!

Between desk jobs and mass transit, people are more sedentary than ever. Hell, I am writing this report from bed. So every little bit to help burn calories is welcome.

Banglz offers an easy way to do this with ankle and wrist weights that are meant to be worn everyday. These soft velcro weights are quick and easy to put on, and come in 1lb. ankle and 1lb. or 1/2 lb. wrist varieties. But sure, you can buy wrist and ankle weights anywhere. What makes these special? First, they are soft. The weights are rounded neoprene sleeves filled with sand. There are no pointy edges or lumps to deal with. But what really sets Banglz apart are the styles. Banglz come in a dozen different colors and patterns: black and white chain print, retro polka-dots, denim, zebra, tie-dye, and more.

The idea behind Banglz is that they are stylish enough to be worn every day. They aren’t going to fool anyone – they are bulky in a way that even the chunkiest jewelry is not. But they are certainly cute, and far more stylish and comfortable than traditional weights. Once, many moons ago, I bought a set of Reebok wrist and ankle weights but they were clunky and painful to wear. They now sit in a box in the closet. Banglz are appealing to the eye and the touch, making me more likely to put them on, even if it just to take the dog for a walk or while doing laundry. Every little bit, right?

Banglz are reasonably priced at $25 per pair. The fabric covers are not attached to the weights, so they can be washed separately. I would love to be able to buy additional covers without having to purchase new weights. A girl’s gotta accessorize.

Finally a hand sanitizer that not only kills germs, but actually leaves your hands feeling clean!

I hate Purell. I love the sanitizing quality, but it feels sticky and heavy on my skin. Luckily Burt’s Bees has a solution with their own, all-natural hand sanitizer. Utilizing ethyl alcohol for sanitation, witch hazel to soothe, and aloe vera to moisturize, this liquid spray leaves hands soft and clean without any funky residue. The only downside is that the 2oz spray bottle is not quite as convenient to carry in your purse (though I have had Purell leak all over my bag, and it wasn’t pretty), but I can live with that.

Another anti-snoring device throws its hat into the ring. Can it compete with Breathe Right?

Mr. Spork’s snoring is epic. I have not slept a single night without earplugs – and even then, I can still hear him snoring. So I am willing to try any stop-snoring solution. And because he loves me, Mr. Spork is willing to try them, too.

Silent Snooz promises to reduce snoring with a reusable plastic nose clip. It slides into your nose and hugs the wall between the two nostrils. It is supposed to open up your nasal passages kind of like those Breathe Right strips – but from the inside. Mr. Spork found Silent Snooz to be reasonably comfortable and did not impede with his sleep. Unfortunately, it didn’t work well. His snoring bursts were a little shorter, and a little softer, but in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t enough to ditch my earplugs. Also, it fell out at some point during the night, and we never were able to find it.

It didn’t work for us, but maybe it would do better for someone with more normal snoring levels.

FiTrainer helps you keep on track towards a better cardio workout

The FiTrainer is designed to take your aerobic workout to the next level. This lightweight headset has a heart rate sensor that clips to your earlobe. Punch in your age and exercise pace to the day, and get started. The FiTrainer gives you a beat to exercise to, based on your heart rate. A friendly female voice lets you know if you need to pick up the pace or slow it down. Like all exercise gadgets, this one has pros and cons.

The Pros

While using it, I truly felt like I was jogging to the beat. It really helped me even out my workout. And of course, this is the most important part.

It allows three audio options: one that is just the beat (which is perfect if you are treadmilling while watching TV); one that adds in its own pseudo-techno music, and one that allows you to connect it to your own MP3 player (which, of course, means you need some kind of arm band for it).

The guide voice is not annoying and doesn’t chime in unnecessarily. The Cons

The headset is not adjustable

In the middle of my workout, my beats just disappeared. Five minutes later, they mysteriously reappeared.

It really only works with sustained cardio workout: treadmill, walking, jogging, elliptical, etc.

There is no volume controlIt’s a good start, but I would like to see what they can come up with in future versions.

FiTrainer can be purchased at itami.com

Confession: Until I saw these DVDs, I thought the Skinny Bitch books were chick lit. Well, now I know.

The books have spawned a couple of workout videos: Skinny Bitch Boot Camp and Skinny Bitch Body, led by the books authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. Boot Camp is a 30-ish minute cardio workout with toning intervals. There is also an abs section and 5×5 – 5 workouts, 5 minutes, for days when you don’t have much time. Body is divided up into 15-20-ish minute work outs for different target areas: arms, abs, legs, and ass.

The Good

I like Rory and Kim. I had to view the DVDs a couple times before I did. They are a weird combination of perky and grumpy. At first I just wanted them to stop pretending to hate what they are doing. But I got used to them. Well, Kim anyway. Rory needs to switch to decaf. Kim actually does seem to be annoyed by the workout, so I identify with her. Plus, sometimes they mess up and aren’t afraid to draw attention to it. Oh, and they curse a fair amount. I like that.

The background music is generic electro-pop. Not grating, not rave-y, just there, in the background, loud enough to hear and get you moving, unobtrusive enough that you don’t get a headache and don’t get that rhythm stuck in your head.

The workouts do as they promise. After Boot Camp, I was in so much pain I could barely step up our two front porch steps. I’ve only done a couple circuits in Body, but they were fun and tough.

Kim does a slightly easier version of the workouts than Rory for those exercise novices like myself. But… (see below)

The Bad

I would have preferred if I could choose “Follow Rory” or “Follow Kim” from the menu. I get a little distracted by Rory.

The camera work needs improving. Why do we need close-ups of the girls? It just makes it harder to figure out what they are doing, especially when they switch exercises in the middle of a close-up

This one is really my issue: I am way too uncoordinated to keep up with a lot of their combinations. Luckily I have gotten pretty good at dancing around like a loon to keep my heart rate up until I can figure out what is going on.

The things I didn’t like are truly just technical issues with the discs. Body is easy – each body part is its own chapter. But on Boot Camp, it is just the entire workout. You can skip to the 5×5 workouts. I know that you are supposed to do the whole thing, but I would like to at least be able to find the abs section and cool-down section.

Interviews and behind-the-scenes footage? Does anyone bother to watch that on a workout DVD? I sure didn’t.
